What causes fascia boards to rot?
The usual local sequence is gutter overflow or a failed drip edge repeatedly wetting the board through the rainy season. Once the paint film fails, the wood stays damp and decay accelerates. Fixing the water source matters as much as replacing the board.
Can fascia be replaced without removing the gutters?
Rarely well. Gutters are fastened through the fascia, so proper replacement means detaching and re-hanging them — which is also the opportunity to correct pitch and fasten into sound new material.
Are my soffits part of the attic ventilation system?
In most homes, yes — soffit panels carry the intake openings that feed attic airflow. Replacement must preserve or restore that intake; blocking it during a cosmetic upgrade quietly creates attic moisture problems.
Wood, aluminum or composite fascia — which should I choose?
Wood is traditional and repairable but needs finish maintenance. Aluminum cladding over wood resists weather but can trap moisture if detailed poorly. Composites resist rot with less upkeep. Exposure, budget and the home's architecture guide the choice.
